For the country’s 250th birthday, Morro Bay is doing something it has never done before.
For the country’s 250th birthday, Morro Bay is doing something it has never done before. Fireworks have not been part of the city’s Fourth of July for years, but on Friday night, July 3, a fleet of drones will rise above Tidelands Park and choreograph the sky to mark the Semiquincentennial – the United States turning 250 – over the working harbor, Morro Rock, and the bay. It is the city’s first drone show on the Fourth.
The decision reframes the whole weekend. The City of Morro Bay’s two-day celebration at Tidelands Park on July 3 and 4 is built around the milestone, and the drone show is the centerpiece. Both days are free. Both days are at 1275 Embarcadero, the south Embarcadero park where the lawn slopes down toward the water, and the Rock sits in full view to the north.
Here is how the weekend lays out, and what else is happening within walking distance and a short drive up the coast.
Friday Night Festival: July 3 at Tidelands Park
Gates effectively open at 6:00 PM, when The Molly Ringwald Project takes the stage. The Central and South Coast 80s tribute band has been working this circuit since 2012, and they often max out venues like Concerts in the Plaza in San Luis Obispo, Live on the Rocks at The Cliffs Hotel, and regular nights at The Siren on Main Street. Their setlist runs from Van Halen and Prince to Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, the golden age of big hair, neon, and shoulder pads. Audiences come dressed for it. You should too.
The music carries the evening until the drones go up at 9:00 PM. Food trucks run throughout, a beer and wine garden anchors the lawn, and the Chablis – Big Rock Charters’ floating bar – sits on the water just off the park. Drinks on a boat at the foot of the Rock, with a band cycling through 1984 onstage, is a specific Morro Bay moment that did not exist in this configuration last year.
The drone show itself wraps the night around 9:30 PM, produced by Sky Elements, the team behind drone shows at major events across the country. For viewing, Tidelands Park is the obvious answer, but the Embarcadero north of the park has clean sightlines, and the North Morro Bay neighborhoods above the harbor catch the show from above. The fog usually settles in by 9:00 PM on a July evening on this coast – bring a jacket and assume you will use it.
Saturday Family Fun Day: July 4 at Tidelands Park
Saturday flips the audience. Where Friday is built for adults and older kids in neon, the Fourth itself is the city’s family day, running from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
The bike parade kicks things off at 10:30 AM. It starts at the north side of the Morro Creek Pedestrian Bridge – the footbridge at the north end of the Embarcadero – and rolls south to Tidelands Park. Deck out your bike in patriotic best. Officially, the “Red, White, and Blue” Bike Parade, with skateboards, scooters, and electric bikes are welcome alongside the kids on tricycles. The over-the-top category is the one to watch.
Rosewood and Honey take the stage at 11:00 AM. The Central Coast acoustic trio of Jenny, Danny, and Mike has played this event before, and Jessy George has handled the national anthem in past years. Their signature is harmony over a Panamanian rosewood guitar, with a setlist that moves from Crosby, Stills, and Nash to Fleetwood Mac to Kacey Musgraves to Dua Lipa without losing its bearings.
The opening flag ceremony lands at noon. The hot dog eating contest follows at 12:15 PM, the first annual edition run by Gilligan’s. Sign up in advance by emailing them here or stopping into the shop to register in person. At 1:00 PM, Sound Investment plugs in. The SLO-based dance band – tagline “Dance Music You Can Bank On” – covers classic rock, current pop, disco, funk, country, and Motown. They are the band that gets the parents on the lawn moving while the kids run between the bounce house and the carnival.
The carnival side runs all day. A $5 wristband per child buys unlimited play. Bounce house, lawn games, face painting, snow cones, and family games and contests. Kiwanis International hosts the Fundraiser BBQ, featuring hot dogs and hamburgers. Gilligan’s Sandwich Shop runs the Hot Dog Eating Contest. Both are Saturday institutions in the making. The Chablis floating bar returns to the water Saturday alongside a beer and wine garden on the lawn. Bring cash – the food and drink vendors do not take cards.
City of Morro Bay Recreation Services puts the whole thing together, with the sponsors above carrying the food, the floating bar, and the kids’ programming.
Make a weekend of it
The Fourth lands on a Saturday in 2026, and the rest of the harbor and the back bay run their own programming alongside the city’s. None of this requires a car.
The Waterfront Market sets up Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on the Embarcadero, in the parking lot between Giovanni’s Fish Market and Stax Wine Bar & Bistro. Thirty-plus local makers, free, family and pet friendly. It is a five-minute walk north from Tidelands Park.
Art in the Park, the Morro Bay Art Association’s Independence Day weekend show, runs Friday through Sunday at Morro Bay City Park on the corner of Morro Bay Boulevard and Harbor Drive. Statewide artists, free admission, one of the longest-running outdoor art shows on the Central Coast. It is the Morro Bay event for the holiday weekend that is not at Tidelands.
Across the back bay in Los Osos, Sea Pines Golf Resort runs its free Saturday Barefoot Concert on the Green from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Back Pages Band plays the 4th of July on the Green edition. No cover, lawn seating, the pollinator garden in bloom.
And for traditional fireworks, the answer is six minutes up Highway 1. Cayucos still does the full classic – town parade in the morning, fireworks over the pier at 9:00 PM. If a child in your group has been counting on the bang and the bloom in the sky, point the car north after the Tidelands wind-down on Friday or after the carnival closes on Saturday.
Practical notes
Park early on both days. The Embarcadero lots fill, the side streets above the harbor fill next, and the walk down from upper Morro Bay Boulevard takes about ten minutes. Bring cash for the carnival wristbands, the BBQ, the food trucks, and anything on the Chablis. Bring layers, especially for Friday night – the marine layer comes in fast once the sun is off the Rock.
The full lineup for the week, including the Waterfront Market, Art in the Park, and Sea Pines, is on the HelloMorroBay events calendar, which is the easiest way to plan the rest of the holiday.
