Malick’s 1978 film is set in the Texas panhandle in 1916, where a hot-tempered laborer (Richard Gere) convinces the woman he loves to marry their wealthy, dying employer so the fortune can become theirs; Brooke Adams and Sam Shepard complete the triangle, Ennio Morricone supplies the score, and Nestor Almendros won the Academy Award for cinematography built around the low gold light of magic hour. Anyone who has watched the last light come across the bay behind the Rock already knows the hour Malick was chasing. Rated PG, 94 minutes.
