In Cayucos, up the coast. The 46th Annual Carlin Soulé Memorial Polar Bear Dip sends thousands of people charging into the Pacific off Cayucos State Beach at noon on New Year’s Day, Friday, January 1, 2027. It is one of the Central Coast’s great traditions: a costume contest, a live DJ, commemorative shirts, and one cold, short, unforgettable swim, rain or shine, because the ocean is the same temperature either way.
Forty-six years in, the Dip has its rhythms. The beach fills through the late morning, costumes ranging from full superhero to bathrobe-and-regret, the countdown hits noon, and the water churns with a few thousand resolutions being tested at once. Most dips last seconds; the bragging rights last all year. Watching from dry sand is a fully respectable way to participate.
The dip is free with no registration, just show up ready to get wet, and commemorative shirt sales fund the Chamber’s community events, with pre-sales opening in December. Bring towels, warm layers for after, and dry clothes in the car. Cayucos is about ten minutes up Highway 1 from Morro Bay, though New Year’s Day parking fills early, so build in time.
