By the Sea Productions is Morro Bay’s only live theater company, a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit staging full-length plays and Readers Theatre shows throughout the year for locals and visitors alike. The mission is simple and stated plainly: creating community through a shared passion for theatre and storytelling.
Seasons mix comedies, dramas, and classics, performed at Erickson Hall at St. Peter’s by the Sea Episcopal Church in Morro Bay. The Readers Theatre format, script-in-hand staged readings, keeps the production footprint light and the schedule full, and ticket prices are deliberately kept affordable, with staged readings running around $20. It is theater built for the town it lives in, priced so anyone can make a night of it.
That community-first approach runs deeper than the ticket price. The company spends its operational dollars with local businesses and donates tickets to fundraisers around town, which means a night at a By the Sea show circulates back through Morro Bay in more ways than one. Auditions are open to the community and posted on the company’s website ahead of each season, so the person on stage next season might be a neighbor, a coworker, or you.
