In Morro Bay. Morro Coast Audubon runs a Friday morning birding session at Morro Rock on August 21 from 9 to 11 AM, free with advance registration and capped at 12 participants. The session works from the flat parking area at the Rock’s base, which makes it fully ADA accessible, no trail, no climb, just two hours of guided looking at one of the richest bird sites on the coast.
The Rock itself is the headline habitat: peregrine falcons nest on its faces, and the harbor mouth below funnels in everything from pelicans and cormorants to loons, grebes, and the odd surprise the leaders live for. Late August adds early fall migrants to the resident cast, and Audubon’s leaders are the kind who can turn a distant speck into a story. Binoculars help but loaners and shared scopes usually cover newcomers.
Registration is required through Morro Coast Audubon, and with a 12-person cap, the sessions fill. Dress in layers for a marine-layer morning at the harbor mouth, where the wind finds you even in August. The parking lot at the base of the Rock is free.
