The preserve’s two viewing platforms look straight out over the back bay’s mudflats, prime shorebird habitat as fall migration settles in, while the pond pulls in ducks and the surrounding vegetation works for songbirds. About a mile on level boardwalks and dirt paths, easy for all levels, and late October is when the monarchs start collecting in the eucalyptus. Free with registration through the MCAS events calendar; meet at the Central Kiosk entrance on Ramona Avenue, street parking out front.
