In downtown Morro Bay. The Bay Theatre’s Monday Specials series brings back The Magnificent Seven on Monday, July 27, one showing only, doors at 5:00 PM and the film at 5:30. Admission is $10 at the theatre. John Sturges’ 1960 western, the great American update of Seven Samurai, sends seven hired gunfighters to liberate a Mexican village from bandits, with a cast for the ages: Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn among them. Rated PG, 2 hours 8 minutes.
Monday Specials are the Bay Theatre’s signature move, the night the single screen goes dark on new releases and runs a classic instead, and a 1960 widescreen western is exactly the kind of film the format exists for. Elmer Bernstein’s score alone earns the theatre trip.
The Bay Theatre is Morro Bay’s single-screen downtown movie house at 464 Morro Bay Blvd, a block off the Embarcadero, where a night at the movies still comes with a real marquee and walkable dinner options on either side of the show. The theatre is closed Thursdays. A 5:30 start makes the whole evening easy: film first, dinner after, home at a reasonable hour.
