In Cambria, up Highway 1. The Central Coast Woodcarvers, the carving club whose membership draws from right here in the Estero Bay area, hold their 46th Annual Woodcarving Show on Saturday, September 19 from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday, September 20 from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Cambria Veterans’ Hall, 1000 Main Street. Admission is a $2 donation with kids 12 and under free, and for many Morro Bay and Los Osos carvers in the club, this weekend is the year’s showcase.
Forty-six years of accumulated craft fills the hall: carvings in every style and subject alongside woodburning, woodturning, and basketry, with ongoing demonstrations both days so visitors can watch blades and blanks become finished work in real time. The timed carving contests supply the drama, Saturday’s open to all levels, Sunday’s restricted to past blue-ribbon winners, carving’s version of a masters final. Drawing tickets offer chances at member-donated carvings (pick the piece you want and stack your tickets on it), and the People’s Choice display puts prize-awarding power in visitors’ hands.
The drive from Morro Bay runs about 25 minutes up Highway 1, one of the prettiest errands on the coast, and the show pairs naturally with a Cambria afternoon: the hall sits at the corner of Main and Cambria Drive, an easy walk from the East Village. Questions go to show chair Melody Mullis at (805) 748-4143 or mamullis@ix.netcom.com.
