Redford’s 1992 adaptation of Norman Maclean’s autobiographical novella follows the Maclean brothers, Brad Pitt and Craig Sheffer, coming of age in early twentieth-century Montana under a minister father who treats fly fishing as something close to scripture. The film’s patience with water, light, and casting loops made it a modern classic, and a town built around a working harbor understands a story where water is the family business and the family religion at once. Rated PG, 2 hours 3 minutes.
