The film society’s spooky-season fundraiser lands its biggest get yet: Doug Jones, the man inside both the Faun and the Pale Man, joins the Bay Theatre for a screening of Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 masterpiece, followed by an intimate onstage conversation hosted by Monse Gutierrez. Twenty years on, the adult fairy tale of a girl in 1944 Francoist Spain who meets a faun promising she’s a princess, if she survives three tasks, remains one of the most visually breathtaking and emotionally harrowing films of its century, and seeing it with the creature himself in the room is a once-in-a-town-history kind of Monday. VIP tickets add a meet-and-greet with an event-exclusive autographed print; every tier supports the Central Coast Film Society.
Doug Jones is the actor genre fans know best for the characters he plays from inside the makeup: the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, Abe Sapien in Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water, Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, plus Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Falling Skies. Hosting the conversation is Monse Gutierrez, the film and horror creator whose interviews include Guillermo del Toro, Willem Dafoe, and M. Night Shyamalan, with coverage credits at Cannes, Sundance, and TIFF; a del Toro collaborator in conversation with a del Toro interviewer is about as on-theme as a Q&A gets.
