Forty-plus years into one of the most influential careers in American hardcore, D.R.I. brings the pit to Main Street on a Thursday night, with three openers stacked in front: Scattered Guts, Hostel Takedown, and Carry the 9. Bands from this generation mostly play festivals and big-city rooms now; a club date this size is the way this music was built to be heard, at close range with nowhere to hide.
Dirty Rotten Imbeciles formed in Houston in 1982 around vocalist Kurt Brecht and guitarist Spike Cassidy, both still in the band, and effectively wrote the blueprint for crossover thrash, the collision of hardcore punk speed and metal muscle; their 1987 album Crossover gave the genre its name, and their moshing skanker logo has been drawn on skate decks and denim jackets ever since.
