In Morro Bay. By The Sea Productions stages The Butler Did It across three weekends this summer, July 24 through August 9, at the company’s Shasta Avenue theater. The community theater company, a fixture of the Morro Bay arts scene, brings the classic comedy whodunit to its intimate stage for a nine-performance run, the kind of locally produced live theater that gives a working-coast town its own footlights.
The Butler Did It is a comedy that plays with every murder-mystery convention you know, the kind of show where the title is the joke and the fun is watching it unfold anyway. By The Sea’s productions lean on local actors and a close-quarters house where you are near enough to the stage to catch every reaction, which suits a farce built on timing and the slow reveal. It is an easy, genuinely fun night out that does not require a drive inland.
The run covers three Friday-Saturday-Sunday weekends. Evening performances are at 7 PM on Fridays and Saturdays (July 24, 25, 31, August 1, 7, 8), and Sunday matinees are at 3 PM (July 26, August 2, 9). Tickets are $30. By The Sea is a small house and community theater runs draw a loyal local crowd, so booking ahead for the date you want is the smart move.
