SUMMARY:Call of the Wild Exhibit at Art Center Morro Bay
DESCRIPTION:Call of the Wild opens Thursday\, June 25\, at Art Center Morro Bay and stays up through August 3.\nThe prompt for the show is wildlife in the broadest sense\, which on the Central Coast means more than the easy answers. Sea otters and peregrine falcons get attention\, but so do shorebirds\, marine mammals\, the heron rookery at Morro Bay State Park\, and the working ecology of the estuary. Member artists submit pieces in any medium that responds to the call. \nThe exhibit fills the main gallery at 835 Main Street\, the Morro Bay Art Association’s home since 1951. Open daily noon to four\, free admission. The run stretches about six weeks\, with pieces rotating in and out as artists drop new work\, so it rewards a return visit or two. \nOpening reception details are still being confirmed. The Art Center typically holds a public Sunday afternoon reception in the first week or two of a new exhibit\, with light food\, wine\, and the chance to meet some of the artists. Call (805) 772-2504 for the latest\, or watch the Art Center’s social channels. \nThe exhibit pairs naturally with a walk through the Morro Bay State Park heron rookery\, a paddle around the back bay to look for sea otters\, or a docent walk through Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in Los Osos. Wildlife on the page\, wildlife on the water\, all in one afternoon. \nPlan your visit at hellomorrobay.com/events/. \n  \nPhoto Credit: https://www.artcentermorrobay.org/exhibits#OVzdql

SUMMARY:🎶 Live Music: Nate Bohard at Taco Temple
DESCRIPTION:Nate Bohard joins the Taco Temple Sunday patio rotation\nNate Bohard joins the Taco Temple Sunday patio lineup this summer\, one of the new names on the rotation across June through October. \nTaco Temple is the Cal-Mex restaurant at 2680 Main that people drive in from Bakersfield and Fresno for on purpose. Salsa bar is a destination of its own. The agave-wine margaritas convert skeptics. Grandma’s carrot cake sells out\, ask early. \nThe patio is dog-friendly\, the show is free\, and a full menu is available throughout the set. SUMMARY:Open Mic at Sammy J's
DESCRIPTION:Take the stage at Sammy J’s Sunday afternoon open mic\nIn downtown Morro Bay. Sammy J’s Irish American Pub hosts an open mic\, an afternoon slot for musicians\, singers\, and anyone with something to share in front of a friendly downtown crowd. Open mics are always a bit of a grab bag\, and that is the appeal: you might catch a polished singer-songwriter\, a first-timer working up the nerve\, or a surprise standout\, all in the same afternoon. Performers and listeners are equally welcome. \nSammy J’s is the Irish American pub on Morro Bay Boulevard\, cold pints and a full kitchen in an easygoing room that suits a laid-back afternoon of live performance. A Sunday-afternoon start makes this a mellow way to cap the weekend\, whether you are signing up to play or just settling in with a pint to watch the lineup unfold. \nIf you want to perform\, come early to sign up and get your spot. For more open mics\, live music\, and weekend happenings around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:The Butler Did It at By The Sea Productions
DESCRIPTION:A comedy whodunit takes the stage at By The Sea Productions\nIn Morro Bay. By The Sea Productions stages The Butler Did It across three weekends this summer\, July 24 through August 9\, at the company’s Shasta Avenue theater. The community theater company\, a fixture of the Morro Bay arts scene\, brings the classic comedy whodunit to its intimate stage for a nine-performance run\, the kind of locally produced live theater that gives a working-coast town its own footlights. \nBUY TICKETS HERE \nThe Butler Did It is a comedy that plays with every murder-mystery convention you know\, the kind of show where the title is the joke and the fun is watching it unfold anyway. By The Sea’s productions lean on local actors and a close-quarters house where you are near enough to the stage to catch every reaction\, which suits a farce built on timing and the slow reveal. It is an easy\, genuinely fun night out that does not require a drive inland. \nThe run covers three Friday-Saturday-Sunday weekends. Evening performances are at 7 PM on Fridays and Saturdays (July 24\, 25\, 31\, August 1\, 7\, 8)\, and Sunday matinees are at 3 PM (July 26\, August 2\, 9). Tickets are $30. By The Sea is a small house and community theater runs draw a loyal local crowd\, so booking ahead for the date you want is the smart move. \nFor more live theater\, arts\, and community events around the bay this summer\, see what’s on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Monday Special: The Magnificent Seven at the Bay Theatre
DESCRIPTION:The Magnificent Seven rides onto the Bay Theatre screen for Monday Specials\nIn downtown Morro Bay. The Bay Theatre’s Monday Specials series brings back The Magnificent Seven on Monday\, July 27\, one showing only\, doors at 5:00 PM and the film at 5:30. Admission is $10 at the theatre. John Sturges’ 1960 western\, the great American update of Seven Samurai\, sends seven hired gunfighters to liberate a Mexican village from bandits\, with a cast for the ages: Yul Brynner\, Steve McQueen\, Charles Bronson\, and James Coburn among them. Rated PG\, 2 hours 8 minutes. \nMonday Specials are the Bay Theatre’s signature move\, the night the single screen goes dark on new releases and runs a classic instead\, and a 1960 widescreen western is exactly the kind of film the format exists for. Elmer Bernstein’s score alone earns the theatre trip. \nThe Bay Theatre is Morro Bay’s single-screen downtown movie house at 464 Morro Bay Blvd\, a block off the Embarcadero\, where a night at the movies still comes with a real marquee and walkable dinner options on either side of the show. The theatre is closed Thursdays. A 5:30 start makes the whole evening easy: film first\, dinner after\, home at a reasonable hour. \nFor the rest of the Monday Specials lineup and everything else downtown\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Nearby: 🎶 Kam's Jams at Schooners
DESCRIPTION:Kam Alton builds a band in front of the audience at Kam’s Jams\nIn Cayucos\, up the coast. Kam’s Jams takes over Schooners the last Tuesday of every month from 7 to 9 PM\, or later when the room demands it\, with Kam Alton bringing a rotating cast of guest musicians for fully improvised sets built in front of the audience. Nothing is rehearsed\, nothing repeats\, and the whole point is watching skilled players find the song in real time. \nImprovised nights are a genuine rarity on the coast’s music calendar\, and this one has become a Schooners signature. Alton is a fixture of the Cayucos scene\, also guest-hosting the venue’s first-Wednesday open mics\, and the trust between him and his revolving guests is what lets the night stay loose without falling apart. Come with no expectations; that is the format working as intended. The Music Room gives the night a proper stage and listening space rather than a corner of the bar\, which is part of why the improvisation holds an audience. \nSchooners sits a few steps from the Cayucos Pier with the full bar and menu running through the night\, about ten minutes up Highway 1 from Morro Bay. Free\, no cover\, last Tuesday of the month. \nFor more one-of-a-kind music nights up and down the coast\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:🎶 Live Music: Cigar Box Ray at Tognazzini's Dockside
DESCRIPTION:Cigar Box Ray holds Wednesday afternoons on the Tognazzini’s Dockside Too patio through the end of the year.\nThe standing Wednesday slot on the working waterfront: Cigar Box Ray plays from 3:00 PM to closing on the all-outdoor fish market patio by the North T-pier\, with the boats coming and going right off the deck\, no cover\, and the counter serving through the whole set. Late lunch\, early dinner\, or one unhurried drink with the harbor in view; the Wednesday habit takes care of itself. \nThe performer is worth knowing. Cigar Box Ray is Ray Riordan\, a Central Coast fixture who plays instruments he built himself\, cigar box guitars and ukuleles crafted by hand\, working from a setlist of more than 700 songs spanning the 1960s to today. Requests are a sport here; with a catalog that deep\, he’ll probably know it. \nWhere: Tognazzini’s Dockside Too\, 1235 Embarcadero\, Morro Bay\nWhen: Wednesdays\, 3:00 PM to close (7:00 PM through October\, 6:00 PM from November)\nCost: Free\, no cover\nGood to know: All seating is outdoors and first come; the patio is dog-friendly \nMore Information \nA 700-song Wednesday is a strong midweek anchor; what the rest of the week hangs on it is over on the Morro Bay events calendar.

SUMMARY:Trivia Night at The Nauti Anchor
DESCRIPTION:Trivia Night runs every Wednesday at The Nauti Anchor in North Morro Bay.\nA free weekly showdown at the Main Street bar and grill\, 6:30 to 7:30 PM: bring a team name or just join in when you get there\, since the format welcomes solo players and drop-ins as readily as the crews who show up with a strategy. The hour-long format keeps it tight\, a quick and competitive weeknight outing rather than a whole evening’s commitment\, and the kitchen and taps run through the game so the table stays fed. It is a restaurant and coffee bar rather than a bar\, so all ages can play. The venue’s own advice is worth taking: come early to get a seat\, and bring your brain. \nWhere: The Nauti Anchor\, 2940 Main St\, Morro Bay\nWhen: Every Wednesday\, 6:30 to 7:30 PM\nCost: Free\nGood to know: All ages; Karaoke takes the Tuesday slot\, 5:00 to 7:00 PM \nMore Information \nA Wednesday trivia habit is a fine spine for the week; the rest of it hangs on the Morro Bay events calendar.

SUMMARY:Nearby: 🎶 Open Mic Night at Schooners
DESCRIPTION:Schooners opens the Music Room mic every Wednesday night\nIn Cayucos\, up the coast. Schooners runs Open Mic Night every Wednesday at 7 PM in its Music Room\, with signups starting at 6\, hosted by local favorite Sam Fischer\, and the first Wednesday of each month handed to Kam Alton as guest host. Music and poetry both take the stage\, from Cayucos regulars to whoever happens to be passing through on Highway 1\, and the jams have a reputation for running late when the room is right. \nA standing open mic at a beachfront venue draws a different crowd than a bar-back-room version: the Music Room gives performers a real stage\, the restaurant keeps the audience fed\, and the mix of locals and travelers means no two Wednesdays sound alike. Performers and listeners are equally welcome\, and the signup sheet is democratic\, get there at 6 if you want a good slot. The room has launched more than a few local collaborations\, since half the players in the county pass through it eventually. \nSchooners sits a few steps from the Cayucos Pier with a full bar and menu running through the night\, about ten minutes up Highway 1 from Morro Bay. Free\, no cover\, every Wednesday. \nFor more open mics and live music up and down the coast\, see what is happening on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Jukebox Bingo at Sammy J's
DESCRIPTION:Jukebox Bingo turns Wednesday nights into a singalong at Sammy J’s\nIn downtown Morro Bay. Sammy J’s runs Jukebox Bingo every Wednesday at 7:30 PM\, the Irish American pub’s signature midweek mashup where the bingo card is filled with songs instead of numbers. Hosted by Leslie\, the game plays exactly how it sounds: the music plays\, you mark the song on your card when you recognize it\, and the singing along takes care of itself\, “sing\, mark\, win\,” as the house puts it. The pub calls the game Biongó\, and the shamrock-green branding tells you how seriously they take the fun. \nThe formula has made Wednesday one of the pub’s best nights: great food and cold drinks from the full menu\, a room that gets louder and happier as the rounds roll\, and awesome prizes for the winners. Because the game runs on recognizing songs rather than trivia knowledge\, every table competes on even footing\, from the regulars to whoever wandered in off Morro Bay Boulevard\, and the singalong factor means even a losing card is a good time. \nSammy J’s at 400 Morro Bay Blvd has quickly stacked its weekly calendar into downtown’s most reliable run of free weeknight entertainment\, with bingo on Wednesdays alongside its trivia\, karaoke\, and open mic nights. Free to play\, no reservations needed\, and arriving for dinner ahead of the 7:30 start claims the good tables before the cards go out. \nFor karaoke\, trivia\, and the rest of the week’s lineup around the bay\, see what is happening on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Morro Bay Thursday Farmers' Market
DESCRIPTION:Every Thursday afternoon\, the parking lot at Spencer’s Fresh Markets fills with the SLO County Farmers Market Association’s midweek market.\nFarmers come from as far south as Goleta\, as far east as Delano\, and up from Salinas\, so the produce table runs deep: stone fruit and berries in summer\, citrus and greens in the cooler months\, plus flowers\, eggs\, and prepared food. It smells like the ocean and stocks like the valley. \nIt’s an easy stop\, right off Highway 1 at 2650 Main Street\, and it runs year-round. Bring a bag and cash for the vendors who prefer it. \nFor more markets\, tastings\, and good food around town\, see what’s coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Nearby: 🎶 Song-A-Thon Playoffs at Schooners
DESCRIPTION:Songwriters battle for cash at the Schooners Song-A-Thon Playoffs\nIn Cayucos\, up the coast. The Song-A-Thon Playoffs take over Schooners on Thursday\, July 30\, a bracket-style original-song contest where eight to ten solo songwriters play their own material\, the audience ranks each round\, and judges crown a champion. Doors open at 6 PM\, the first round starts at 7\, and awards land at 9\, with a $250 cash top prize and gift cards down the board. Free to attend\, upstairs from the beach at 171 North Ocean Avenue. \nThe format is what makes it: original songs only\, head-to-head rounds\, and an audience with real power over who advances\, which turns a listening night into a participation sport. The county keeps a deep bench of working songwriters\, and a cash prize on a competition bracket brings out both the polished regulars and the wildcard entries that make these nights unpredictable in the best way. \nSong-A-Thon runs the last Thursday of every month at Schooners\, so a good night here can become a habit. The full bar and menu run through the rounds\, and Cayucos sits about ten minutes up Highway 1 from Morro Bay\, an easy Thursday drive for a night of brand-new songs. \nFor more songwriter nights and Nearby Happenings up the coast\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:🎶 Live Music: Frankie and The Pool Boys with Trabants at The Siren
DESCRIPTION:Surf rock washes into The Siren with Frankie and The Pool Boys and Trabants\nOn Main Street in Morro Bay. Frankie and The Pool Boys bring their surf rock to The Siren on Thursday\, July 30 at 7 PM\, with Trabants sharing the bill for a full night of instrumental reverb and twang. Tickets run $15 to $18 at thesirenmorrobay.com. For a surf town with a working break a mile from the stage\, a surf-rock double bill lands as close to home as live music gets. \nThe genre is having a durable revival\, and both acts work the classic template: drenched reverb\, tremolo-picked melody lines\, and rhythm sections built for dancing rather than sitting. Frankie and The Pool Boys carry deep credibility in the modern surf scene\, and Trabants bring a moodier\, cinematic edge to the same vocabulary\, so the two sets complement rather than repeat each other. \nThe Siren is the Main Street room that carries most of Morro Bay’s live music\, small\, dark\, and close to the stage\, with the kitchen and full bar running through the night. The show is 21 and over per the venue’s evening policy. A Thursday show makes this an easy add before the weekend crowds arrive\, and the dance floor tends to fill fast once the first set of instrumentals starts rolling. \nFor more surf rock and touring bills around the bay\, see what is on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Nearby: Family Field Trip\, Sunset Bat Walk in the Elfin Forest
DESCRIPTION:The Estuary Program leads a sunset bat walk through the Elfin Forest\nIn Los Osos\, across the back bay. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program leads a family sunset bat walk through the Elfin Forest on Thursday\, July 30 from 8 to 9 PM\, timed to the hour when the pygmy oak woodland above the estuary turns into prime bat feeding ground. Staff bring the acoustic detectors that make the bats’ echolocation audible\, turning an invisible hunt overhead into something the whole family can hear happening in real time. \nThe Elfin Forest is one of the back bay’s quiet treasures\, a boardwalk loop through centuries-old dwarf oaks with estuary views the whole way\, and it takes on a different character at dusk. Bats are voracious insect predators and a healthy population is a good sign for the whole ecosystem\, which is exactly the kind of connection the Estuary Program’s family field trips are built to make. \nRegistration is through the Estuary Program’s Eventbrite page\, where the exact meeting point along the boardwalk is provided. Bring layers for the evening cool-down and closed-toe shoes for the boardwalk. Spots on the program’s family trips are limited and tend to fill\, so registering early is wise. \nFor more wildlife walks and family outings around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:🍿 Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the Bay Theatre (matinee showing)
DESCRIPTION:Spider-Man: Brand New Day takes over the Bay Theatre screen\nIn downtown Morro Bay. Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings onto the Bay Theatre screen from Friday\, July 31 through Wednesday\, August 19\, the summer’s big superhero tentpole playing a nearly three-week run on Morro Bay’s hometown single screen. The theatre’s standard schedule runs showings Friday\, Saturday\, Tuesday\, and Wednesday afternoons and evenings\, with Sunday matinees\, and the theatre dark on Mondays and Thursdays; check the show page for this run’s confirmed showtimes. \nA long run means no rush and plenty of chances\, which makes this the easy family outing of the August calendar: a matinee after a morning on the beach\, or an evening show with dinner downtown on either side. For a movie built for the big screen\, the walkable hometown theatre is the way to see it. Nearly three weeks also means the run spans two Monday Specials and a weekend matinee\, so the marquee stays busy around it. \nFor the Monday Specials and everything else on the marquee\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.
