SUMMARY:Western Monarch Butterflies: Protecting Our Pollinators
DESCRIPTION:A monarch documentary and community conversation come to the Bay Theatre\nOn Morro Bay Boulevard. The Central Coast State Parks Association presents a special screening of Western Monarch Butterflies: Protecting Our Pollinators at the Bay Theatre on Monday\, August 10\, with doors at 5 PM and the film at 5:30. Directed by Ian A. Nelson\, the documentary follows the western monarch’s perilous annual migration from the western slopes of the Rockies to the California coast\, one of the most astonishing feats in nature\, made on wings you could crush between two fingers. \nThe story it tells is urgent. Western monarch numbers once ran into the millions; in just a few decades they have dwindled to a fraction of that\, a decline scientists read as a warning about pollinator health and the ecosystems that depend on it. But the film is not only a lament. It follows communities across the western United States restoring wild and urban habitat alike\, making the case that anyone can be a conservationist and that what helps monarchs helps a whole range of native pollinators. \nThis lands close to home. Morro Bay sits on the monarchs’ overwintering map\, with clusters gathering in the eucalyptus and cypress from roughly October through February at Morro Bay State Park\, and at Sweet Springs and the Monarch Grove Natural Area across the back bay in Los Osos. Watching a film about the migration in a town the butterflies actually visit gives the subject a weight it would not have anywhere inland. \nThe evening opens with a short CCSPA film introducing the association’s work supporting the ten state parks of San Luis Obispo County through conservation\, education\, and expanded public access\, and the screening is followed by a Q&A\, community discussion\, and reception. Tickets are $18. For more wildlife programs\, films\, and community events around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Family Field Trip: Kayaking in the Estuary
DESCRIPTION:The Estuary Program takes families paddling on the bay\nOn the Morro Bay estuary. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program leads a family kayaking field trip on Wednesday\, August 12\, from 10 AM to noon\, putting paddles in hands and families on the water at the hour when the estuary is at its best. Mid-morning is when the fog usually lifts\, the water lies flat\, and the otters and herons are working\, and program staff handles the interpretation while you handle the paddle. \nThere is no better way to understand the estuary than from a kayak seat inside it. The 2\,300-acre bay is a Globally Important Bird Area and the ecological heart of the town\, and two guided hours on the water turns all of that from trivia into experience: eelgrass beds under the hull\, sandpipers on the flats\, and the Rock standing over the whole scene. \nRegistration is through the Estuary Program’s Eventbrite page\, where the launch point and trip details are provided. Dress in layers you can get a little wet in\, bring water and sun protection\, and register early; the program’s paddling trips are among its most popular\, and spots are limited. No paddling experience is needed; the program’s staff cover the basics on shore before anyone touches water. \nFor more on-the-water outings and family events around the bay\, see what is on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Nearby: Sweet Springs Habitat Walk with Morro Coast Audubon Society
DESCRIPTION:Audubon walks the habitats of Sweet Springs at low tide\nIn Los Osos\, across the back bay. Morro Coast Audubon Society leads a habitat walk through Sweet Springs Nature Preserve on Saturday\, August 15 from 9 to 11 AM\, with Faylla Chapman covering the preserve’s history and the plant communities that hold its bird habitat together. The route ends at the viewing platform over the back bay\, timed for low tide\, when the mudflats fill with feeding shorebirds and the platform becomes the best seat on the estuary. \nSweet Springs is the back bay’s pocket jewel\, freshwater ponds under Monterey pines opening onto the tidal flats\, and a walk that explains how the pieces fit (the springs\, the plants\, the tides\, the birds) turns a pretty stroll into a working understanding of why this small preserve punches so far above its size. Chapman’s history-plus-habitat framing is exactly the right lens for it. \nThe walk is free but you must request to register through the event link; registration questions go to fieldtrips@morrocoastaudubon.org\, and Audubon’s summer trips have been filling fast\, so reaching out early is wise. Flat\, easy walking throughout\, with layers advised for the marine-layer morning and binoculars welcome but not required. Street parking on Ramona Avenue serves the preserve entrance directly. \nFor more guided walks and Nearby Happenings around the estuary\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.
