SUMMARY:Lighthouse Century Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:The Lighthouse Century rolls out of Morro Bay High School\nIn Morro Bay. The Lighthouse Century\, the San Luis Obispo Bicycle Club’s long-running fall ride\, starts and finishes at Morro Bay High School on Saturday\, September 26\, with riders rolling out from 7 AM. The event offers a full century of 100 miles\, a metric century of 62\, and shorter route options\, tracing the back roads and the coast on some of the best cycling terrain in the state. \nThe ride’s name is honest: the routes work the coastline toward the lighthouses north of town\, with the long course giving riders a full day of Highway 1 views\, ranch-road climbs\, and the kind of late-September weather that makes this the sweet spot of the coastal cycling year. Rest stops\, sag support\, and finish-line food are all part of the package\, a genuinely well-supported club ride rather than a bare-bones one. \nRegistration is required in advance through the SLO Bicycle Club at slobc.org\, with entry fees varying by route. For spectators\, the start and finish at the high school make for easy cheering\, and the coffee-fueled 7 AM rollout is its own spectacle. Riders should bring layers for the marine-layer morning that burns into a warm afternoon. \nFor more rides\, races\, and outdoor events around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

Dress in warm layers for the pre-dawn departure\, bring motion-sickness measures if you have doubts\, and expect fish cleaning and licenses to be handled dockside per standard charter practice\, confirm specifics with the trip organizers. \nFor more on-the-water outings and harbor happenings\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:SLO County Creeks to Coast Cleanup\, Morro Bay Sites
DESCRIPTION:Morro Bay joins the county’s biggest volunteer morning for the Creeks to Coast Cleanup\nIn and around Morro Bay. The SLO County Creeks to Coast Cleanup returns Saturday\, September 19 from 9 AM to noon\, and Morro Bay’s beaches\, bayfront\, and creek mouths are among the roughly 30 sites countywide where volunteers turn out. Organized by ECOSLO and celebrating 21 years of the effort\, it is the county’s largest single volunteer event and part of California Coastal Cleanup Day\, the statewide morning when thousands work the same three hours from the mountains to the tide line. \nThe countywide framing matters here more than most places. Everything that washes into a gutter or a creek anywhere in the watershed eventually rides gravity toward the ocean\, and for this stretch of coast that means the estuary and the beaches Morro Bay is built around. Cleaning an inland creek in September protects the same water the otters and herons work all winter. Past years have pulled thousands of pounds of trash out of the county’s waterways in a single morning\, cigarette butts\, food wrappers\, and broken plastic leading the haul. \nVolunteering is simple: register at ecoslo.org/creeks-to-coast\, pick the site you want (Morro Bay sites are listed alongside the rest of the county)\, and show up ready for three hours outside. Site captains provide instructions and supplies\, though bringing your own bucket and gardening gloves cuts down on the event’s own plastic footprint. All ages are welcome\, and families are a big part of the turnout. \nIt is a genuinely satisfying way to spend a September morning\, and the beach looks different afterward because of you. For more volunteer days and outdoor events around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Marina Boardwalk Bird Walk with Morro Coast Audubon
DESCRIPTION:An intermediate bird walk works the State Park marina boardwalk\nIn Morro Bay State Park. Morro Coast Audubon leads an intermediate-level bird walk along the State Park marina boardwalk on Saturday\, August 22 from 8 to 11 AM\, free with registration and limited to 12. The boardwalk is where the estuary meets the moorings\, and three hours of flat\, easy walking covers one of the most productive edges of the whole bay\, mudflats on one side\, marsh and eucalyptus on the other. \nThis one is pitched a notch up from the beginner sessions: the leaders ask for some field experience and an eBird account\, since the group logs its sightings as it goes. That makes it a genuine skills-building morning for birders ready to move past pointing and toward recording\, with scopes on the flats and the estuary’s late-summer shorebird traffic providing plenty to log. \nRegistration is required through Morro Coast Audubon and the dozen spots go quickly. An 8 AM start means marine-layer conditions on the water\, so layers and a warm hand around the coffee are standard kit. The marina parking area serves the boardwalk directly. The State Park day-use setting means heron rookery views are a bonus possibility on the walk in. \nFor more birding and estuary mornings around the bay\, see what is on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Morro Rock Birding with Morro Coast Audubon
DESCRIPTION:Audubon leads a morning of birding at the base of Morro Rock\nIn Morro Bay. Morro Coast Audubon runs a Friday morning birding session at Morro Rock on August 21 from 9 to 11 AM\, free with advance registration and capped at 12 participants. The session works from the flat parking area at the Rock’s base\, which makes it fully ADA accessible\, no trail\, no climb\, just two hours of guided looking at one of the richest bird sites on the coast. \nThe Rock itself is the headline habitat: peregrine falcons nest on its faces\, and the harbor mouth below funnels in everything from pelicans and cormorants to loons\, grebes\, and the odd surprise the leaders live for. Late August adds early fall migrants to the resident cast\, and Audubon’s leaders are the kind who can turn a distant speck into a story. Binoculars help but loaners and shared scopes usually cover newcomers. \nRegistration is required through Morro Coast Audubon\, and with a 12-person cap\, the sessions fill. Dress in layers for a marine-layer morning at the harbor mouth\, where the wind finds you even in August. The parking lot at the base of the Rock is free. \nFor more bird walks and outdoor mornings around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Kayak and Oyster Tasting Tours
DESCRIPTION:Central Coast Outdoors and Grassy Bar Oyster Company have partnered on one of the most distinctive tours in Morro Bay – a paddle across the back bay combined with oyster shucking and tasting at the Grassy Bar farm.\nThe tour visits the working oyster lease in the estuary\, where guides walk you through the bay’s aquaculture history\, the difference between Pacific Gold and Grassy Bar cultivars\, and the conditions that make this stretch of California coastline one of the country’s best oyster-growing waters. You shuck and taste fresh oysters straight from the bay. \nBeginner-friendly. All gear provided. Comfortable on a sit-on-top kayak or in tandem. \nThere’s always more going on – the HelloMorroBay events calendar keeps track. \nphoto credit: https://www.centralcoastoutdoors.com/kayaking-morro-bay-california/kayaking-oyster-farm-and-tasting.php

SUMMARY:Nearby: Sweet Springs Habitat Walk with Morro Coast Audubon Society
DESCRIPTION:Audubon walks the habitats of Sweet Springs at low tide\nIn Los Osos\, across the back bay. Morro Coast Audubon Society leads a habitat walk through Sweet Springs Nature Preserve on Saturday\, August 15 from 9 to 11 AM\, with Faylla Chapman covering the preserve’s history and the plant communities that hold its bird habitat together. The route ends at the viewing platform over the back bay\, timed for low tide\, when the mudflats fill with feeding shorebirds and the platform becomes the best seat on the estuary. \nSweet Springs is the back bay’s pocket jewel\, freshwater ponds under Monterey pines opening onto the tidal flats\, and a walk that explains how the pieces fit (the springs\, the plants\, the tides\, the birds) turns a pretty stroll into a working understanding of why this small preserve punches so far above its size. Chapman’s history-plus-habitat framing is exactly the right lens for it. \nThe walk is free but you must request to register through the event link; registration questions go to fieldtrips@morrocoastaudubon.org\, and Audubon’s summer trips have been filling fast\, so reaching out early is wise. Flat\, easy walking throughout\, with layers advised for the marine-layer morning and binoculars welcome but not required. Street parking on Ramona Avenue serves the preserve entrance directly. \nFor more guided walks and Nearby Happenings around the estuary\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Family Field Trip: Kayaking in the Estuary
DESCRIPTION:The Estuary Program takes families paddling on the bay\nOn the Morro Bay estuary. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program leads a family kayaking field trip on Wednesday\, August 12\, from 10 AM to noon\, putting paddles in hands and families on the water at the hour when the estuary is at its best. Mid-morning is when the fog usually lifts\, the water lies flat\, and the otters and herons are working\, and program staff handles the interpretation while you handle the paddle. \nThere is no better way to understand the estuary than from a kayak seat inside it. The 2\,300-acre bay is a Globally Important Bird Area and the ecological heart of the town\, and two guided hours on the water turns all of that from trivia into experience: eelgrass beds under the hull\, sandpipers on the flats\, and the Rock standing over the whole scene. \nRegistration is through the Estuary Program’s Eventbrite page\, where the launch point and trip details are provided. Dress in layers you can get a little wet in\, bring water and sun protection\, and register early; the program’s paddling trips are among its most popular\, and spots are limited. No paddling experience is needed; the program’s staff cover the basics on shore before anyone touches water. \nFor more on-the-water outings and family events around the bay\, see what is on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Molten Morros Campfire Program at Morro Bay State Park
DESCRIPTION:State Parks tells the volcano story behind the Morros at a campfire program\nIn Morro Bay State Park. California State Parks hosts Molten Morros\, a free\, family-friendly campfire program about the volcanoes in our parks\, on Sunday\, August 9 from 8 to 8:45 PM at the Morro Bay State Park Campground Campfire Center. The subject could not be more local: the Morros themselves\, the chain of peaks running from Morro Rock inland\, are the remains of ancient volcanic activity\, which means the campfire talk is about the very landmarks standing over the campfire. \nThe 45-minute format is built for families\, a real ranger-led campfire program of the classic State Parks kind\, short enough for young kids and timed so the evening ends before bedtime collapses. It is free to attend\, and the campground setting adds the atmosphere no classroom can: dusk settling over the park\, the smell of campfires\, and the geology lesson happening on top of the geology. \nThe Campfire Center sits at the back of the campground’s Day Use area. Per State Parks\, parking is free along State Park Road and in the Marina parking lot\, just walk into the campground from there\, while day use parking inside the campground runs $8. The park posted a map to the Campfire Center on its Instagram\, which is also the place to check for any updates. \nFor more family programs and outdoor evenings around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Nearby: Family Free Day: Scaly Safari at the SLO Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:The Botanical Garden waives admission for a Scaly Safari family day\nAt El Chorro\, over the grade from Morro Bay. The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden hosts its almost-monthly Family Free Day on Sunday\, August 9 from 10 AM to 2 PM\, and August’s theme is Scaly Safari\, a celebration of the garden’s scalier residents. Garden admission is waived for the day\, the event is all ages\, and dogs on leash are welcome\, so the garden’s own advice applies: pack a picnic and stay a while. \nThe Children’s Garden runs crafts and educational activities on the reptile theme\, and the rest of the grounds are open to wander: the main Display Garden\, the Fire Safe garden\, and the hill hike up to the Human Sundial\, where kids become the gnomon and their shadow tells the time. The retail nursery is open for business too\, stocked with the garden’s self-propagated native plants suited to the Central Coast’s Mediterranean climate\, worth a browse for anyone rethinking a yard for the dry months. \nOne practical note from the garden: El Chorro Regional Park charges a $5 vehicle entry fee at the gate even on free-admission days\, and cash speeds up the line. The garden sits on Dairy Creek Road inside the park\, about 15 minutes from Morro Bay on Highway 1 toward San Luis Obispo\, an easy Sunday run for a morning that combines a picnic\, a hike\, and something genuinely educational without anyone noticing the education part. \nPlease note: there’s a $5 fee to enter El Chorro park. Having cash will speed up park entry! \nFor more family days and Nearby Happenings along the corridor\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:VSCO Photo Walk at Coleman Park
DESCRIPTION:VSCO hosts a golden-hour photo walk at the base of the Rock\nIn Morro Bay. The photo app VSCO hosts a free group photo walk starting at Coleman Park on Saturday\, August 8 from 6 to 8 PM\, with free registration on Eventbrite. The timing is the whole idea: the two-hour window lands squarely in golden hour\, when the light comes off the water\, the Rock holds the last of it\, and the stretch between the park and the harbor mouth becomes one of the most photogenic half-miles in California. \nPhoto walks work on a simple social premise\, a group of people who like making pictures wandering the same route\, trading angles and app tricks as they go\, and this one asks nothing beyond showing up: bring whatever camera you shoot with\, phone included\, since VSCO’s whole world is phone photography anyway. Between the Rock\, the otters\, the fleet heading in\, and the sandspit light\, the subject matter takes care of itself. \nColeman Park sits on Coleman Drive along the harbor route to the Rock\, with the beach and the harbor mouth all within frame-hunting distance. Free\, all levels welcome. \nFor more outdoor gatherings and golden-hour events around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:🎶 Live Music: John Pemberton at The Nauti Anchor
DESCRIPTION:Country singer John Pemberton takes over the Nauti Anchor patio\nIn North Morro Bay. The Nauti Anchor hosts live country music with John Pemberton on the patio\, Friday\, August 7 from 5 to 8 PM\, three hours of country at the Main Street coffee\, beer\, and wine house. \nPemberton is worth the trip on his own. A traditional country singer in the truest sense\, the Clovis-based artist picked up his father’s guitar at age three and was touring in his family’s band by twelve. At nineteen he walked away from country for gospel ministry\, recording in Nashville and touring for more than two decades before returning to country in 2015. The return has been vindicated: his single That Was Then topped the International Hot Country Music Chart\, CCR Radio named him male vocalist of the year\, and he has opened for Easton Corbin and Jackson Dean. His motto is changing lives one song at a time\, and the rich\, traditional tone that carries it is exactly what a patio evening wants. \nHear more from Pemberton at pembertonmusic.com\, and for more live music around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Nearby: Family Field Trip\, Sunset Bat Walk in the Elfin Forest
DESCRIPTION:The Estuary Program leads a sunset bat walk through the Elfin Forest\nIn Los Osos\, across the back bay. The Morro Bay National Estuary Program leads a family sunset bat walk through the Elfin Forest on Thursday\, July 30 from 8 to 9 PM\, timed to the hour when the pygmy oak woodland above the estuary turns into prime bat feeding ground. Staff bring the acoustic detectors that make the bats’ echolocation audible\, turning an invisible hunt overhead into something the whole family can hear happening in real time. \nThe Elfin Forest is one of the back bay’s quiet treasures\, a boardwalk loop through centuries-old dwarf oaks with estuary views the whole way\, and it takes on a different character at dusk. Bats are voracious insect predators and a healthy population is a good sign for the whole ecosystem\, which is exactly the kind of connection the Estuary Program’s family field trips are built to make. \nRegistration is through the Estuary Program’s Eventbrite page\, where the exact meeting point along the boardwalk is provided. Bring layers for the evening cool-down and closed-toe shoes for the boardwalk. Spots on the program’s family trips are limited and tend to fill\, so registering early is wise. \nFor more wildlife walks and family outings around the bay\, see what is coming up on the event calendar.

SUMMARY:Rock to Pier Run
DESCRIPTION:The Rock to Pier Run sends runners up the sand from the Rock to the Cayucos Pier\nFrom Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier. The Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier Run sends runners up the open beach on Saturday\, July 18 at 8 AM\, the 56th running of one of the oldest beach races on the Central Coast. The course is a straight shot along the sand with the Rock at your back and the pier ahead\, tide and soft sand included\, which is exactly what makes it a different kind of race than a road 5K. It is a Morro Bay summer tradition as much as it is a competition. \nThe companion Rock’n Around the Pier Half Marathon\, now in its 12th year\, runs the same morning on an out-and-back course with a detour through Cloisters Park near mile 10.5. Between the two distances the morning draws everyone from serious half-marathoners to families walking the beach leg\, which gives the event its mix of race-day focus and community-morning ease. The finish at the Cayucos Pier puts you in a second beach town with the morning still ahead of you. \nThis is a point-to-point beach course\, so plan logistics in advance: most runners arrange a shuttle or a ride back to the start\, since you finish a full town up the coast from where you began. Register at runsignup.com\, where the price steps up after July 1\, so signing up early saves money. Wear shoes you do not mind getting sandy and wet\, and dress for a cool coastal morning that warms as the fog lifts. \nFor more beach runs\, community events\, and outdoor mornings around the bay this summer\, see what is on the event calendar.
