Morro Bay’s 2\,300-acre estuary is a Globally Important Bird Area and a major Pacific Flyway stopover\, and more than 200 species turn up during festival week most years. The trip roster reaches well beyond the water\, too: estuary shorebirds and waterfowl\, raptors and grassland specialists out on the Carrizo Plain\, oak-woodland species inland\, and deep-water pelagics on the boat trips offshore. For a serious birder\, it is a rare chance to work multiple distinct habitats from a single home base in one long weekend. \nBeyond the field trips\, the festival runs workshops and master classes for every level\, from first-time birders learning to use binoculars to veterans sharpening identification skills\, plus three keynote speakers across the weekend.
